Freeskate - Senior Thesis Animated Short Film

Costume and character design for the animated short Freeskate. Inspired by the visual design of Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura, Freeskate follows the journey of the teen Polish figure skater Gosia Porembka during her first Olympic season. Her costumes include a performance dress inspired by the Polish Eagle, a jacket representing the Polish flag, and a softer pastel coaching outfit.

Freeskate - Side Characters

In Freeskate, Gosia must must make a crucial decision: either become obsessed with success like her coach, or become like the little girl who cheered her on even when she fell. Below are the designs of Gosia’s coach, the little girl who cheers her on, and her students once she becomes a coach herself.

I have been competitively figure skating since childhood, and later became a coach myself. Before competitions, I used to add crystals to my own dresses to modify them to make them unique to me. I took inspiration from my own experience to design the costumes for Freeskate.

Buster’s design is based off a campus ministry emotional support dog of the same name. Ollie is representative of a California brown bear. Honey pays homage to the hundreds of rabbits that feast on LMU’s grassy lawns. Finally, Bobby is based on the family of raccoons that lives outside the school diner.
